Members of the Garthdee Parish Church congregation are always delighted to see a baptism take place in their Church. So we rejoice that you are considering having either yourself or your child baptised here. We will happily provide a place of love and welcome. Baptism allows the church to publicly welcome the person being baptised into the Church family.
Baptism of Children
When a new baby comes along it can bring a lot of happiness and joy into an already happy family. If you have any questions after reading this page please get in touch using the information on our contact page.
An infant baptism is an important event for your child, for the parents and our church family.
Baptism always takes place within a service of church worship. (However, this can be flexible in special circumstances please ask about emergency baptisms,)
The promises you make as parents are made before a church congregation. In turn, they also promise to support you and your child.
In the baptismal service, one of the parents or both would be required to answer two questions. If the child’s parents are not able to do this another close member of the family could act as sponsor.
1. Do you confess your faith in God as your creator and Father, in Jesus Christ as your Lord, and in the Holy Spirit as your Guide and Helper?
2. Do you promise, to teach your child the truths and duties of the Christian faith and to encourage her/him as he/she grows in life and worship of the Church?
Role of Godparents.
Within the Church of Scotland, there is no official role for Godparents. However, we do acknowledge the symbolic importance of Godparents to many families. So we invite them to come forward during the ceremony to be part of the family.
Thanksgiving and Blessing of an infant.
The baptism service above involves making promises making a commitment to both your child and to God.
What if you do not feel that you are able to make such a promise? In that case, we are more than willing to thank God for your child. We would also ask for God’s blessing on him/her during our normal Sunday morning service. The child will not be baptised with water. Instead, we will pray God’s blessing on both the child and the whole family.
It is possible at a later stage to come back to the church and ask for a full baptism.
Baptism as an Adult
Adult baptism is offered to adults who accept the Lord Jesus as their Saviour. It is also a sign that they wish to be actively involved in the life of the church. However becoming a full member of our local church is not required. We would expect you to attend our church services regularly before the baptism.
Before the baptism you are asked:
Do you, in the presence of this congregation, turn away from sin and ask for God’s forgiveness; seeking a deepening faith in which you will honour God and love other people as yourself?
After the baptism you will be asked:
Do you promise, with God’s help, to serve the Lord and continue to be part of the family of the church for the rest of your life?
